In the summer of 2013, the brotherhood of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian (located in northern Ohio) made the decision to move to Ukraine. As they desired that the monastic life which they had established since the foundation of their brotherhood be continued, with the blessing of Metropolitan Hilarion they transferred possession of their monastery to the Hermitage of the Holy Cross. It has now been reorganized as the Skete of St. John the Theologian, a dependency of the Hermitage and sharing the same abbot, Archimandrite Seraphim. There are currently two monks who have been assigned there, working to further build on the good foundation made by the previous brotherhood and to establish the skete way of life there. St. John’s Skete supports itself primarily through the sale of church and liturgical goods.
According to the monastic tradition, church services are held each morning and evening. Vigil is held on Saturdays and the eves of church feast days beginning at 6:30pm, with Hours & Liturgy served at 9am on Sundays and feast days. If you wish to attend weekday services or to visit the store, please call ahead.
While the skete welcomes pilgrims, please be aware that accommodations are extremely limited and overnight stays are restricted to male visitors. Please contact the fathers as far in advance as possible in order to arrange a pilgrimage.
